Abstract:
I will review recent experiments on the propagation of intense laser beams in gaseous media at the University of Arizona. The main focus of our work is on the controllable generation of plasma channels in air through the application of laser beam and pulse shaping. Potential applications of air plasmas that we investigate include channeling electrical breakdown, guiding microwave beams and “air lasing” – the creation of remote backward-propagating laser-like sources in ambient air.
Pavel Polynkin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1995 and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2000. From 2003, he is with the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, where he is currently an Associate Research Professor. The research in his group focuses on the strong-field laser physics, laser material processing and the applications of ultrashort intense lasers to atmospheric science. He has co-authored 60 refereed publications, 11 US patents and has given 30 plenary and invited talks at international conferences.
